The installation consists of 79 plaster casts of my right foot and 1 of the left one. The moulds are left empty inside as if they were spare parts of the body for replacement. These negative imprints verify the presence of an absent body. The moulds are removed from the body with a small cut on the heel that remains open as a reminder of an incurable wound.
The installation speaks of a personal condition that causes a spontaneous loss of balance. The steps are attempts to overcome a dislocation, making the work an archive of a forced static nature. Beyond the personal physical weakness there stands the social condition of my country which after the Turkish invasion of 1974, remains fragmented. The frontier of occupied North Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus leaves a strong visible imprint in the divided capital of Nicosia present in our everyday lives as residents near the border. These steps define the incompleted step towards the reunification of the island.
