The Wardrobe

Contemporary artistic creation has a multifaceted role: to survive an essentially ‘dystopian’ society, a product of the rapid and alarming expansion of technology, science, and economy, but also to question and influence it. The unruly absurdity of life itself leads to the search for the ‘familiar’ and our inevitable return to it, this safe space which is first and foremost our body.
This contemplative journey of Elena Adamou leads to The Wardrobe, a unique Still Life project that gifts the human body a series of duplicated ‘spare parts’, protecting it from its inevitable decay.
The ephemeral body functions as a shell for the soul, the self, identity, and sum of unique mental and spiritual characteristics, elements that combine to express individuality.
With these ‘spare parts’ we can preserve our physical body as intact and invincible, protecting it from the wear and tear of a mechanical kind of living while ensuring a secure return to our ‘home’ and the ‘familiar.’
Through her In-Situ installation at Archive Concept Store in the heart of Old Town Nicosia, Elena Adamou provides us with a ‘solution’ to the issue of our decaying body, in a direct and honest way: with an exhibition that features a series of genuine, authentic ‘spare parts’ of her own ‘familiar’ home.
Exhibited in a place that usually features commodities and material products, these parts come together as a reference point and a thought-provoking project to assist the audience in their search for the ‘familiar.’
With evident references to the timeless Fritz Lang film ‘Metropolis’, in which the human is just a cog in the machine of modern society, the artist invites us to explore her personal journey toward the ‘familiar.’

Η σύγχρονη εικαστική δημιουργία έχει πολυσύνθετο ρόλο· καλείται να επιβιώσει αλλά και να προβληματίσει μια ουσιαστικά “δυστοπική” κοινωνία, αποτέλεσμα της ραγδαίας και τρομακτικής εξέλιξης της τεχνολογίας, των επιστημών και της οικονομίας.
Η ανεξέλεγκτη ακρότητα της ίδιας της ζωής οδηγεί στην αναζήτηση του “οικείου” και στην αέναη επιστροφή του καθενός σε αυτό, στον ασφαλή χώρο του, που είναι πρώτα απ’ όλα το σώμα μας. Η διαδρομή της συλλογιστικής της Έλενας Αδάμου καταλήγει στο The Wardrobe, ένα έργο μιας καλούμενης Νεκρής Φύσης (Still Life), η οποία προσφέρει για το ανθρώπινο σώμα - προστατεύοντάς το από την αναπόφευκτη φθορά του - μια σειρά από αντίγραφα ως “ανταλλακτικά”.
Το εφήμερο σώμα λειτουργεί ως περίβλημα της ψυχής, του εαυτού, της ταυτότητας, του συνόλου των ιδιαίτερων ψυχικών και πνευματικών χαρακτηριστικών, στοιχεία που συνιστούν τη μοναδικότητα του ατόμου.
Με τα ανταλλακτικά του σώματος μπορούμε να διατηρήσουμε το υλικό μας σώμα “άθικτο” και “άφθαρτο”, προστατεύοντάς το από την καταπόνηση της μηχανικής ζωής διατηρώντας έτσι μια ασφαλισμένη επιστροφή στον “οίκο” μας και στο “οικείο” μας.
Με την In-Situ εγκατάσταση της στο Concept Store Αrchive στο κέντρο της Παλιάς Λευκωσίας η Έλενα Αδάμου μας δείχνει με δωρικό τρόπο την καλούμενη “λύση” στο εφήμερο του σώματος και παρουσιάζει μια σειρά από γνήσια και αυθεντικά ανταλλακτικά του δικού της οικείου χώρου...
Εκτεθειμένα στη θέση των εμπορευμάτων και αναλώσιμων προϊόντων αποτελούν σημεία αναφοράς και προβληματισμού για τον θεατή και τον καλούν σε μια αναζήτηση του “οίκου” του.
Με σαφείς αναφορές στο διαχρονικό ‘Metropolis’ του Φριτζ Λανγκ, στο οποίο ο άνθρωπος είναι απλά ένα ανταλλακτικό στη μηχανή της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας, η καλλιτέχνης μας καλεί να την ακολουθήσουμε στη δική της πρόταση για το “οικείο”.
