The Time-Counters are a series of embroidered pieces I started creating in 2015 to give a physical and visible dimension to the intimate passing of time, and have since evolved into a distinct art form. Thread and needle are used like a pencil to trace fine lines alongside one another onto the fabric. In the absence of a pre-planned pattern, the composition unfolds organically during the process.
As the layers of thread accumulate, the warp and weft of the fabric reshape, changing their structure. With each session, the embroidered surface results denser, since the thread creates a new layer of fabric.
The work becomes an expression of hatching through time. Every minute spent in the process corresponds to an inner impulse reflecting a personal, intimate dimension of the passage of time. The minutes spent on every piece are noted to record the passing of time, and each piece is named after the collective number of minutes spent on its completion, as time is our most valuable possession.
The Time Counters are maps of accumulated time, traced in the friction of memory.
